Communication And Friendship

"One friend in a lifetime is much; two are many; three are hardly possible."-Henry Brooks Adams. True friends are rare. It has been said that friendship doubles our joys and halves our sorrows.

Some may feel that friends are not necessary, sadly, to their regret, they learn all too late in life, we all need true friends. In fact, the quality of your life depends much on the quality (not the quantity) of your friendships. Healthy friendships are essential to our mental and physical well-being. Dr. David Weeks, a neurophysiologist said "I have a high proportion of patients with anxieties, phobias, and depression who could be described as lonely. There are connections between the severity of depression and the severity of loneliness."

Communication

A market survey revealed that "in the United Sates 25 percent of the adult population suffer 'chronic loneliness' and . . . in France half the people have experienced acute isolation." The explosions of computer chat rooms, the proliferation of dating clubs, and profusion of newspaper advertisements by those seeking companionship, are indicators that we all need human contact. And what better contact can we have than a true friend?

Communication And Friendship

The answers to the following questions should help us in our search for good friends. What is a friend? How can I find a true friend? How can I keep my friends? And how can I be a true friend?

What is a friend? One dictionary defines a friend as " one attached to another by affection or esteem." Another simply states, "a person one likes." To me the best description of a true friend is found in one of the oldest books ever written. These words of wise King Solomon at Proverbs 17:17 state, "A true companion is loving all the time, and is a brother that is born for when there is distress." Our health may fail us, our material possessions may lose their value, but true friendship grows stronger and flourishes with time. True intimate friends are among the most precious gifts you will ever have, and if allowed to grow, can produce a positive influence on you for life.

Friendship is a gift everyone is able to give and to receive. American essayist Ralph Waldo Emmerson once said: "the only way to have a friend is to be one." Genuine friendships develop over time. All to often people want the benefits of a good friendship but they are too busy to invest the necessary time. Remember a friend is more than just an acquaintance. We have many acquaintances -neighbors, colleagues, and people we meet now and again. True friendship goes far beyond a casual meeting with others. Friendship is special; it requires an investment of time, energy, and emotional commitment. Friendship brings privileges, but it also involves responsibilities.

Good communication is a necessity with those we value as friends. When you converse with others, you show personal interest in their feelings, and you encourage them to express their thoughts and emotions. If the conversation always centers on you, you might end up talking to yourself. Good communication requires being a good listener as well as the ability to express yourself. To have real friends, we must open up to others-let them know who we really are. At the same time we must allow them the same opportunity. Just be yourself. Only by being genuine can we enjoy a genuine friendship.

To keep good friends do not overlook the importance of loyalty and confidentiality. The quickest way to lose a good friend is to reveal a secret or something said in confidence. Once we have a good friend, never take him, or her for granted. You can have good friends, if you are willing to spend the time.

Workplace Communication

Communication is a two-way process. Communication is successful only when the receiver understands the message intended by the sender.

Effective workplace communication is very essential for smooth and efficient functioning of an organization. The manager should have proper communication with his subordinates, else it will lead to absenteeism amongst workers, lower productivity, development of grapevine networks in an organization. There should be two-way communication in an organization. Manager should have personal contact with his subordinates. He should clearly communicate goals and policies of the organization to his subordinates and should get feedback on these goals and policies.

Communication

Feedback plays a very important role in the communication process. It enables us to evaluate the effectiveness of our message. Giving the subordinates chance to provide feedback is important for maintaining a open communication climate. The manager must create an environment that encourages feedback. For example: after communicating a job assignment, he should ask "Do all of you understand?", "Is that clear?", "Do you have any doubts?", etc. This will ensure that whether his message is understood or not.

Workplace Communication

Both upward and downward communications are important. Upward communication will keep manager informed about employees job satisfaction, employees feelings for their peers and about organization in general. Downward communication is important so that manager can give job instructions, explain the roles and policies and explain the issues which need immediate attention. Similarly we have horizontal communication in an organization which is also very important. It is essential that people working at same level should have effective communication amongst them so that there is co-ordination between them. Communication at workplace should be clear, concise and specific. There should be effective use of body language at workplace. Body language reflects the position of a person in the organization. A manager should make effective use of his body language while communicating with his subordinates.

Communication at workplace is mainly of two types - Verbal (Meetings, Speech, One to One feedbacks etc), Non Verbal (Written, printed, emails etc).

Ideas For Spending the Queen's Jubilee Weekend in London

Where better to spend the Queen's Diamond Jubilee weekend than London? The capital will be transformed into a great big festival space with events big and small taking place throughout. The country's even been allowed an extra bank holiday this year!
One of the highlights of the celebrations is The Big Jubilee Lunch on June 3rd. The Big Lunch is an initiative that's been around for a few years now to encourage community spirit and develop friendly relationships among neighbours. People are invited to host neighbourhood lunches and barbeques in a venue of their choice be it the street or local park. The lunches are likely to unfold into street parties in later hours of the day. If you're lucky enough to have friends in London, see about joining them in their neighbourhood for a spot of bonding with the locals.

The Diamond Jubilee Pageant will take place on the Thames, also on June 3rd. The big boat parade will feature up to 1000 boats from the UK, Commonwealth states and other countries around the world. The central boat will be the Royal Barge, upon which the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will take centre stage, waving at onlookers on the river bank. Wake up early so as to get prime position on the river bank. It'll be an exciting procession to see!

On Monday the 4th June the BBC will host a concert at Buckingham Palace. Tickets are available to the public by ballot. Many famous British artists like Andrew Lloyd Weber and Gary Barlow have been involved in setting the programme and composing a special song to honour the Queen's 60-year reign. If you miss out on tickets, the concert will be broadcast at various locations throughout the city so find somewhere to enjoy the show with your friends and family.

Monday is also the day of Jubilee Beacons. Thousands of beacons are expected to be lit across the country, including the Channel Islands, as well as the Commonwealth with the Queen herself lighting the National Beacon. Why not light your own beacon?

Tuesday will see the culmination of the celebrations. The Queen will be attending a service at St Paul's Cathedral, two receptions, and lunch at Westminster. She will proceed to Buckingham Palace in her carriage, where she will make a Balcony appearance upon arrival. There'll also be a flypast. Again, make sure to get to the Buckingham Palace area early to secure a spot from which to observe the action.

To find out more about all officially scheduled activities, visit the dedicated Diamond Jubilee website.

Thankfully, London is home to thousands of hotels, hostels and guest houses so you're still in with a chance of snapping up some accommodation. You're most likely to find free rooms at a big, chain-owned London hotel. Alternatively, look for a place outside London that's just a short train journey away. It will be nice to escape the hustle and bustle for a few hours in the evening.
